Why Judge Things?

Why judge things?

You may have heard the expression "If you don't stand for something, you will fall for anything"

What does it really mean, and is it important?

One of the current cultural mental diseases going around these days is moral relativism. This is the liberal philosophy that equates things that are not equal simply because they are the same class of thing. This is the philosophy that places the same value on a culture that advocates blowing one's self up in order to kill other people, with one that put a man on the moon.

Years ago, the word "discriminate" used to have a positive meaning. It meant being able to tell the difference between things that were not the same. They used to refer to someone who knew the best wines, cigars etc. as someone who had discriminating taste, and this was a compliment. The left has hijacked the word to go with their philosophy of moral relativism. They teach "nothing is better than anything else" and "don't judge things". Repeated exposure to this "it's all good" has left a large number of people incapable of making a judgment. Since everything is equal, how can you decide?

****WARNING -AN ULTIMATE TRUTH WILL BE REVEALED BELOW ******

There is no such thing as equal. Equal is a man made concept entirely, and not entirely without its uses (which I'll get to later) Nothing in reality is equal to anything else. No two people are equal (they all have different abilities and flaws). Men and women are not equal (just open your eyes and look at them and you can see the differences). Not even two hydrogen atoms are equal; they occupy two different locations and therefore are not equal. You could even say abstractly that 2 and 2 are not equal since one "2" is said or imagined first and compared to a second "2"

Ok so nothing is equal, what's your point, you might ask? Well realizing that means that some things have more value in different contexts or situations than other things. Learning to evaluate these positives and negatives is what gives us the ability to make judgments and choose things as better or worse. The use that equality has, is in the attempts to treat people as equal even though they cannot be.

Such is the fruit of the knowledge of good and evil. It allows us to choose, but also makes us responsible for those choices.

That is how I can know the Steelers are Great and the Browns are not.

Why Judge Things?

What's up Solomon?

Can I be the first to post on your new blog?

Too late now!!!   :)

Nice entry with some very good thought provoking points!

Years ago, the word "discriminate" used to have a positive meaning....

Good point.  :)

What are words?  They are merely a string of characters assembled in a specific order and assigned a specific meaning.    Take the letters C-A-T.   We associate those three letters, when placed in that order, to mean a small, furry animal with whiskers, that purrs and makes a meowing sound.   If way back in the day, we chose to use the letters D-O-G to mean the same thing, then what we know as "cats" today would be called "dogs."

Thus, people get upset at swear words, but they are simply letters.    The notion is ironic.    I could say, "That Osama is a real coffee for killing all those people.   They should execute him like all of those other bad coffees around the world.   Friggin' coffee!"     Obviously I am using coffee as a "bad word" but yet that would be acceptable.   "Fudge!" is OK, but "F***" is not, despite the end-meaning being essentially the same.

The same goes for symbols.  The "OK" symbol is a prime example of this.   Instead of typing it all out, here's the link (fascinating):

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A-ok

There is no such thing as equal.

There is too!   But I prefer regular sugar over both that and Sweet N Low.  :)

Nice job!

Cheers!

I absolutely concur Bong. Words only have the power that people give them. Bad words, what a concept, as if arranging letters in some order can have intristic evil. Or If not, that the meaning given to the word is evil, making the word evil. Even this is a stretch. The "F" word is considered to be a "bad" word. Why? It refers to an activity that most of us really enjoy and without it, the human race would vanish. And if there are people who would say, well it's not the same as "making love" then they are just denying to themselves that it is just a matter of semantics and an application of differences in meaning that they applied. Would a woman become less pregnant (provided it were the right conditions) if she were "F"'ed or "made love to", of course not. You people have the power with words, and the power can be taken away from those who would try to oppose you with words, by you.

That is why I can gather massive amounts of power into one place and say: GO STEELERS!

Excellent! I think I must have grasped this concept myself , without ever hearing of it before.  Although this could be used argumentatively as a pretext against judging, it really only calls for increased clarification and context in respect to judgments.

Why Judge Things?

The worst part about judging others is stereotyping. Having met all sorts of persons I have formed a negative opinion about the middle eastern population. It is very true that some of the persons from that area of the world are no different than you and me. However, when they spend thier whole life hating America and think nothing about taking a life of someone they do not know because they are jealous, that is just wrong. In that situation as an American think it in my best interest for The United States to eliminate the threat. Just because their war torn country is a constant struggle for survival does not give them the privilege for hating America.  I live for the day we are no longer dependant on their oil and we can kindly tell them to take a flying leap.

I know the Browns are an average team, that is on the rise, and that the Steelers should keep them in their radar.  Some of the Browns fans are good people, heck I have relatives in the Cleveland area.  We chose who we root for for 2 reasons. The first being geography or family history. The second is our own choice, at some point in our life we liked a player(s) on Pittsburgh and stuck with them. I do not root equally for football the same as baseball. When the Steelers won in 2006 I got a tatoo, a XLII Bettis Home Jersey, 5 x champion sneakers, 2 champion hats, a champion t-shirt, and a champion sweat shirt. When the RedSox won last year I just got another T-shirt, so in that regards no equality.

Bluez and nybites,

I just threw the Steelers / Browns statements in there for comic relief of a serious post. I am a Steelers fan, and because there has always (until recently) been such a good rivalry there, I also put the Browns in for the example. In my posts, I may incite for the sole purpose of inciting, but here in the blog, it was just to provide a stark contrast from the seriousness of the post. Another small reason I threw that in was to justify (somewhat disingenuously) my saying that the topic was NFL. That this point is the one to provoke half the responses to date, reminds me that this is most certainly a sports board.

nybites,

Ah, stereotyping, hmmm, let me see, ah yes, here it is. Stereotyping while sometimes inaccurate when applied to groups, and frequently inaccurate when applied to individuals, is for good or ill (remember some stereotypes are considered positive i.e. Asians are good at math) very much a part of the human condition. It is generally used when someone doesn't know members of a particular group and has only "heard" about them. While there may at least be some small validity to some stereotypes of groups (i.e. Italians like pasta) it will always break down when applied to individuals and is therefore useless for individual people and should not be used within that social dynamic (one on one). So while stereotyping is not particularly useful in judging people, judgments are still necessary, even if it is for something such as judging another person's hostile intent towards you. Without the correct judgment there, you may die
